The Bloomsburg University Radiologist Assistant program is housed in the Department of Biological and Allied Health Sciences within the College of Science and Technology. This two-year masters degree program builds on the department's 25-year-old undergraduate medical imaging program that enrolls nearly 200 students.

The American Society of Radiologic Technologists sponsored the preparation of a draft curriculum (prepared by the ASRT Advanced Practice Advisory Panel) which provided a detailed listing of competencies that each Radiologist Assistant must attain.   This draft curriculum was used, with permission from Mr. Kevin Powers, ASRT Director of Education, as a basis for developing the Bloomsburg University course sequence and individual course syllabi.

The first class was admitted in the fall 2006 and subsequent cohorts of students have been and will be admitted each fall. The curriculum is designed for full-time students who will attend three semesters per year. A total of 45 credits is required for the degree.   The curriculum is designed to accommodate students who are currently employed as Radiologic Technologists and time on campus (away from their current employment) has been minimized through the use of distance education and preceptorships.   Students will take the first year fall semester courses using web-based instruction, will be on campus for the spring and summer for classes, and will return to their current employment (or an alternate preceptorship site) for their second year of classes.   During the preceptorship year the student will also take an applied research course.   This course culminates in a final project that is suitable for presentation and/or publication in a professional journal such as Scanner or Radiologic Technology.   The curriculum is completed with a final on-line Radiologist Assistant Seminar class that is scheduled for the summer of the second year to help prepare the student for the certification exam.
