Mission:
The interdisciplinary Civic Engagement Living and Learning Community (LLC) at Bloomsburg University provides the building blocks necessary for students seeking to make a difference in our society. While many consider political and community-wide change to be reserved for those in high-profile positions, we at Bloomsburg University believe leadership is the responsibility of all students. We believe that participation in a program that encourages civic engagement will enable students to become well-informed citizens capable of making a difference in today’s complex world.

Bloomsburg University seeks to prepare students to assume leadership positions and to deal creatively, responsibly, and ethically with the many systems that impact their personal and professional lives. Students who engage in this interdisciplinary LLC will develop an increased awareness of their values, character, and personal accountability. They will also learn skills to become effective contributors in civic life, strong advocates of social improvements, and active participants in politics.

Civic engagement is grounded in shared experience. Students who engage with their communities will emerge with deeper appreciation of cultural diversity and the value of inclusiveness, collaboration, and shared responsibility.  Involvement in this LLC will enable students to respond to the differences and commonalities they share with others as they navigate our complex society, seeking to lead with integrity.

Group activities include field trips to Washington, D.C., New York City, and Harrisburg; Constitution Day Debate, Community Speakers and Guest Lecturers; Community Service Projects with Toys for Tots, EOS Therapeutic Riding Center; regular movie nights; and study sessions.

"I have enjoyed working with the students in the Civic Engagement Living and Learning Community.  I strongly believe that this is an excellent opportunity for incoming freshmen to become involved with fellow students, the campus, and the local community. Many students also find that their Learning Community experiences have helped with their transition into college life."

What Civic Engagement Students Have to Say...

“The Civic Engagement Living and Learning Community is a wonderful organization that assisted my transition into college. I enjoyed building friendships with fellow members while taking fascinating academic courses. It was also comforting to get acquainted with fellow classmates while living in the same community. Volunteering my services, participating in team-building activities, and attending educational trips were all highlights of this program for me. The Civic Engagement LLC is a beneficial organization that is full of possibilities, and I am very thankful that I had the opportunity to take advantage of them.”
Carolyn Gerber | Fall 2006

The civic engagement is a postive organization that helps freshmen gradually go from high school to college.  It is a group of kids that help you along every step of the way.  The kids in the group have similar classes so this is helpful for the students becuase everyone is able to get together and help each other study and prepare properly for the exams, but it is not all just academics.  The civic engagement takes part in many activities as well.  To start off the year there is a BBQ and a rock climbing event to help everyone get to know and start to trust everyone (trust me when you are fifty feet off the ground and your peers have you saftey rope you learn to trust).  This year we also went down to Washington D.C. and went bowling.  The Civic Engagement group also helps out the community we tried, a few times unfortunitally the wether hasn't always permitted, to help out and voulenteer around the community.  The one successful thing we have done is helped out with Toys For Tots.  This spring we are planning on doing more voulenteering and trips.   I strongly recommend joining this program I thought it was questionable at first, but once I saw everything I got out of it (20+ amazing friends) I see it was highly worth joining.

“As soon as I got to the university, I immediately felt accepted by the Civic Engagement group. Both Dr. Davis and Dr. Lawrence were welcoming right from the very start. The Civic Engagement Living and Learning Community has given me the experience of a lifetime. From planning many great activities on campus, to spending a fun-filled weekend in Washington, D.C., these have all been highlights of being in the group. By getting involved in the community, we can not only better ourselves, but also those around us. There is no greater feeling than that of knowing that you impacted someone else’s life. I joined the Civic Engagement LLC because I wanted to help others out and get involved while living on campus. Our group has become like one big family, and I would not trade them for anything. I strongly encourage new students to join the Civic Engagement LLC. Trust me: you will not be disappointed!”
Alicia Poist | Fall 2006
"The Civic Engagment Living Learning Community gave me a chance to meet more people, have fun, and be more relaxed about my classes. Your freshman year especially first semester is a very scary time with meeting new friends, adjusting to not being home, and keeping up with your schoolwork. This group has introduced me to people who are different and interesting but they are also there for you to study with but at the same time have fun with. I have learned alot from these people and I know that I'll carry that with me not only until I graduate but for the rest of my life."
