Presidential Leadership Living Learning Community

Mission:

The Presidential Leadership Program is designed to engage students in active learning that empowers them to "practice what we preach," says Bloomsburg University President Jessica S. Kozloff.

In 1996, the Bloomsburg University Foundation began funding 25 scholarships for freshmen who were acknowledged leaders in their high schools and in their communities.

Each recipient is offered the opportunity to participate in the Presidential Leadership Program (PLP), and the majority of students are able to arrange their schedules to do so. Under the supervision of the advisor, Ms. Kathy Kollar Valovage, students participate in a number of activities during the year.

In the fall of 1998, 11 of 25 PLP freshmen and three PLP sophomores became the first residents of the PLP wing in Schuylkill Hall. This living/learning environment fosters leadership opportunities and encourages a sense of community among members.

"As an educator, it is a joy to work with these student leaders. I am blessed to be surrounded by such smart, creative and energetic students who genuinely want to learn, who love to be involved in activities, and who enjoy giving back through service to others."
What PLP Students Have to Say...
"When I first got the letter about living on the PLP floor, my first thought was that there was no way I wanted to live on a quiet floor. I pictured the PLP floor being like a study hall surrounded people constantly studying and I wanted nothing like that. Of course, I wanted to study! But I also wanted to have a chance to be with people and have fun. I figured I was coming to a new place and I wanted to be surrounded by different types of people and have fun. I chose not to live on the PLP floor for that reason but sometimes I regret not living on the floor with the other members. All the members that live on the PLP floor got to be really close while at first I had trouble getting to know them. They all had a lot of fun living together and their dorms weren't like the quiet dorms; I heard numerous stories about their volleyball team and their annual dance parties! Everyone in PLP is different and the variety of people in the group makes the group really special. It is really cool to see a group of people who are differnt come together, and end up having alot more in common than they thought they did. Even though I did not live on the floor I still participated in activities and I got to know a lot of the group members and we all got along really well. PLP is a great opportunity to get involved and help other people while having fun. I would recommend to future PLP students to live on the PLP floor if they are unsure because it is a great way to get to know the other members and form an instant bond. But whatever you do choose, choose what you think you will like the best because that is where you will be for the next year."
